Listing multiple positions at one company on a resume does not have to be complicated

If you have risen in rank at your company and have got several promotions to show for it, learning how to format it all on a resume successfully will be useful.

You are probably aware of how to construct a strong career summary section for your resume using your past work experience. But what changes when several of those job titles have been held at the same company?

Usually, a resume only separates jobs by job title and company. But when you want to list multiple jobs with the same employer, you can do it in two different ways:

  • Combining your jobs into one description or
  • Separating them into multiple entries

Stacking your positions into one description

This is the most common way of listing several jobs at the same company in a resume. Most candidates choose this method to draw the reader’s attention to their lateral moves and progressive responsibilities within the company. Here’s how the formatting works:

  • You should include the overall date range at the company at the top
  • Next, describe each experience by listing each job title with the relevant dates
  • Remember to accompany each position with a bulleted list of achievements

Use a reverse chronological format where your latest work experience goes on top, and list previous jobs below it in the correct order. Always use assertive, strong language and draw the recruiter’s attention to your key accomplishments. Begin each bullet point with an action verb and quantify results whenever possible. Here’s what a sample resume would look like:

COMPANY X, Long Island, NY • January 2015 – December 2020

Senior Software Engineer | January 2018 – December 2020

  • Key Achievement 1
  • Key Achievement 2
  • Key Achievement 3

Software Engineer | January 2015 – December 2017

  • Key Achievement 1
  • Key Achievement 2
  • Key Achievement 3

Separating jobs into multiple entries

Some positions are more impressive when they are listed separately. If you believe that your experience should get attention as separate jobs, you can choose to display them individually. List each experience just as you would list them if they were jobs in different companies. This will let a reader identify how your achievements progressed with time and your position.

Be careful not to make it seem as if you were job hopping when writing your resume. A hiring manager can get that impression if you have listed a bunch of jobs one after another within a brief period. Mention the company name and dates clearly. You can choose to list only the important jobs separately and group the lesser significant jobs.

Here’s what a sample resume would look like:

COMPANY X, Long Island, NY • January 2018 – December 2020

Senior Software Engineer

  • Key Achievement 1
  • Key Achievement 2
  • Key Achievement 3

COMPANY X, Long Island, NY • January 2015 – December 2017

Software Engineer

  • Key Achievement 1
  • Key Achievement 2
  • Key Achievement 3

What should you do if you want to list positions at the same company with interruptions?

Some employees work for one company and move on to a better position at a different company. Often, their previous employers hire them back with an even more attractive package. If you have had such an experience, you may have some doubts about how to format the work experience section of your resume. Here’s how you can do it:

COMPANY X, Long Island, NY • January 2018 – December 2020

Senior Software Engineer

  • Key Achievement 1
  • Key Achievement 2
  • Key Achievement 3

COMPANY Y, Bronx, NY • January 2015 – December 2017

Software Engineer

  • Key Achievement 1
  • Key Achievement 2
  • Key Achievement 3

COMPANY X, Long Island, NY • January 2012 – December 2014

Junior Software Engineer

  • Key Achievement 1
  • Key Achievement 2
  • Key Achievement 3
