In today’s fast-paced work environment, achieving a perfect balance between work and personal life has become an impossible task for a majority of professionals. Many professionals succumb to burnout because they can’t find the right balance between their personal lives and work, especially those working from home.
However, if you want to achieve long-term productivity, you must find a good harmony between your personal life and work. Finding this balance will help you have better mental and physical health as well as achieve more as a professional.
Set clear boundaries
Boundaries are very important for you as a professional. Whether you work on-site or from home, you must set defined work hours and stick to them. This is the first step of detaching your work from your personal life. With remote work and constant connectivity, work often bleeds into personal time. Completely disconnecting from emails and work calls after certain hours will give you the kind of control you need over your personal hours.
Prioritize tasks
One of the biggest reasons why your work spills onto your personal time is because of the lack of prioritization during the workday. Learn to differentiate between urgent tasks and important tasks. Get the urgent stuff done earlier during your workday so that you can focus on the less urgent tasks during the rest of the day. When the critical tasks are out of the way, you can divide your time between the less critical work.
Take breaks
Taking frequent breaks will help you recharge your mind and body for work. Burnout is a risk that many professionals who don’t prioritize breaks face. Schedule short breaks during your day to avoid burnout. You can come up with a method to take a short break after completing a task or after working straight for a set period of time. We suggest working for 25 minutes and taking a five-minute break to recharge.
Learn to say no
You don’t have to say yes to every task thrown your way to become a good employee. Learn to say no to things that you can’t get done. Overcommitting to work will seriously drive you toward burnout. Whether it is more responsibilities or extra projects, you will need to pick and choose your battles in the workplace. Only accept what is reasonable and what you believe that you can achieve without compromising your work-life balance.
Say yes to flexible work
Many employers offer flexible working options to their employees. If your company is offering remote work, flexible schedules, or flexible hours, consider them seriously. One or two days a week where you don’t have to deal with commute can make a significant difference in your work-life balance.
Delegate tasks
If you are managing a team, there will be times when you are compelled to complete a whole project on your own. While that must be a good thought, repeating this same practice over and over again will leave your team demotivated and you burnt out. Learn how to delegate tasks among your team to suit their strengths and weaknesses. It will also empower your team members and take a lot of stress off of your shoulders.
